In December 2024 the state of New York officially banned pet stores from selling dogs, cats, and rabbits. The law was put in to stop the supply chain of cruel, high volume breeding operations, but not everyone believes the law is having its intended effects. Jeff Morton, host of ‘Dog Smart Radio’ on WOR Sunday mornings, spoke with Mendte in the Morning about what the law actually does to pet stores and people looking to buy a pet.
“What it does remove is regulated, inspected, and transparent pet stores from the equation,” Morton tells host Larry Mendte. “And they just push consumers right to the internet and to underground sellers.”
Morton believes this law hurts families and pets: “When families lose access to legitimate businesses and pet stores, they don’t stop wanting dogs, they just lose a safe shopping option.”
