Was A Virtual Learning Day Better Than A Traditional Snow Day?

The massive snow storm that hit New York City this past weekend was viewed by many as the first big test of Zohran Mamdani as Mayor. While the safety and cleanup measures carried out by the Department of Sanitation went great, the decision by Mamdani to have schools operate virtually yesterday, as opposed to a traditional day off for the snow, has drawn some criticism. Joe Borelli, former minority leader of the NYC Council, spoke with Mendte in the Morning about why that decision may have been made.

“I am literally on the school board… and I couldn’t explain to you the rationale behind this,” Borelli told host Larry Mendte. “Other than the fact that the teachers don’t want to give back snow days when they start their summer vacation.”

Borelli believes the intended outcome of the virtual learning day didn’t occur either: “My wife is a teacher… not one of her students signed on and after about 3 hours we had forgotten the computer was even on.”
