Luigi Mangione, a 27-year-old accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, will appear in a Manhattan courtroom today for a pretrial hearing. Mangione faces nine counts, including second-degree murder, and has pleaded not guilty. His lawyers will request the dismissal of two federal charges, including murder through the use of a firearm, arguing that they are legally flawed.

The case has drawn significant attention, partly due to the dramatic nature of Mangione's December 2024 arrest, which his lawyers described as a "Marvel movie" spectacle. They also claim that public statements by authorities, including U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, have prejudiced the case by advocating for the death penalty before Mangione's indictment. Prosecutors counter that the charges are legally sufficient and that pretrial publicity does not constitute a constitutional crisis.

Today's hearing will also address the defense's motion to exclude evidence found in Mangione's backpack during his arrest, including a gun allegedly used in the crime and a notebook detailing plans to "wack" a health insurance executive. The defense argues the search was illegal due to the lack of a warrant, while prosecutors maintain it was justified for safety reasons.

The case has become a cause célèbre for those critical of the health insurance industry, with supporters attending Mangione's court appearances. The hearing may also see Judge Margaret Garnett set a trial date.
