Protesters in New York City gathered on Wednesday to express their outrage over a fatal shooting involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis. Demonstrators assembled at Foley Square before marching to the Department of Homeland Security headquarters at Federal Plaza. The protest was in response to the death of Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, who was shot by an ICE agent during a confrontation in Minneapolis.
Protesters chanted Good's name and held signs, voicing their frustration with ICE and the Trump administration's immigration policies. Many demonstrators argued that ICE agents do not ensure community safety but rather cause harm. The protest marked the second day of demonstrations against the incident, as well as against the broader immigration enforcement policies under President Trump's administration.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has been a strong advocate for maintaining sanctuary city policies, condemned the shooting. He stated, "The news coming out of Minneapolis is horrific. This is one part that has been a year full of cruelty, and we know that when ICE agents attack immigrants, they attack every one of us across this country." Mayor Mamdani reassured residents that New York City will continue to stand up for immigrants and uphold sanctuary city policies.
The protests come amid heightened tensions over immigration enforcement, with local leaders and community members calling for justice and change. The incident has sparked a national conversation about the role of ICE and the impact of immigration policies on communities across the United States.
