FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker is stepping down today as New York City prepares for a new administration under Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. Tucker, who became the 35th FDNY Commissioner in August 2024, cited "fundamental differences" with Mamdani as a key reason for his resignation. In an interview with CBS Mornings, Tucker mentioned that his Jewish faith and Mamdani's political stance contributed to his decision to leave. He noted, "There are things that I have heard [Mamdani] say that would make it difficult for me to continue on in such a senior executive role" (FireRescue1).

Tucker's resignation comes shortly after Mamdani's election victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Tucker, who has been a strong supporter of Israel, felt his views would not align with Mamdani's administration, which faced criticism for statements perceived as antisemitic. Despite the ideological differences, Tucker expressed gratitude to Mayor Eric Adams for the opportunity to serve, calling it "the honor of a lifetime" (NBC New York).

The transition to Mamdani's administration involves significant changes, with the mayor-elect requesting the resignations of 179 staffers from the current administration. Mamdani aims to install a new team and reset city leadership before his inauguration on January 1, 2026. The Adams administration has not yet announced who will serve as the interim FDNY commissioner (FOX 5 NY).
