New York City experienced its first major snowfall of the season over the weekend, with snow accumulations varying across the boroughs. According to the National Weather Service, Staten Island recorded the highest snowfall, with Grasmere receiving 6.1 inches. Other areas, such as Dongan Hills, saw 5.2 inches. Brooklyn's snowfall ranged from 2.9 inches in Midwood to 4.3 inches in Williamsburg, while Manhattan received just under 3 inches, with 2.9 inches recorded in Central Park. Queens saw 4.6 inches at John F. Kennedy International Airport and 2.6 inches at LaGuardia, and parts of the Bronx reported more than 3 inches.
The snowstorm, which began Saturday night and continued into Sunday, marked the earliest date since 2019 that New York City recorded an inch or more of snow. Fox 5 NY reported that the snowfall caused delays at all three regional airports.
As the snow fell, residents took to the parks to enjoy the winter weather. In Prospect Park, Brooklyn residents like Ashima Jane and Marco Striuli expressed excitement about the snow. Jane said, "It's just wet enough where it kind of gets you and you can form a perfect snowball without too much effort." Striuli enjoyed an early morning stroll with his family, remarking on the special atmosphere.
However, the National Weather Service warned of potentially dangerous conditions as temperatures dropped sharply, with wind chills falling to around zero. City officials cautioned residents about icy streets and sidewalks, advising them to take precautions as temperatures fell into the teens Sunday night. Alternate side parking was suspended on Monday, though parking meter rules remained in effect.
