Following recent mass shootings at Brown University in Rhode Island and a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia, the New York Police Department is increasing security measures across New York City. The NYPD is deploying additional officers to universities and public Hanukkah events, although officials state there is no known threat to local schools.
The shooting at Brown University on Saturday resulted in two deaths and nine injuries during a final exam review session. A person of interest was detained but later released. Yale University and other institutions have also heightened security measures, requiring ID access to buildings.
In Sydney, a terrorist attack at Bondi Beach targeted a Jewish gathering, leaving 15 dead and many injured. Australian authorities identified the attackers as a father-son duo, Sajid and Naveed Akram. The incident has led to plans for stricter gun laws in Australia. CNN reported that the attack has intensified discussions on antisemitism and security.
In response to these events, New York City is taking precautions to ensure the safety of its residents during the holiday season.
