A woman is in custody following a stabbing incident inside Macy's in Herald Square, New York City, on Thursday. Kerri Aherne, a 43-year-old from Massachusetts, has been charged with attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. According to the New York Police Department, Aherne allegedly stabbed a 38-year-old tourist from California multiple times in the back and arm just before 3 p.m. The victim, who was shopping with her husband, was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is in stable condition.

The attack appeared to be unprovoked, and it is unclear if Aherne knew the victim. A spokesperson for Macy's expressed deep sadness about the incident, emphasizing that customer and employee safety is their top priority. They deferred further questions to local authorities.

This incident marks the second assault in Macy's flagship store in the past month. On November 19, another unprovoked attack occurred when a 65-year-old woman allegedly assaulted a 71-year-old man with a cell phone.
