Did Zohran Mamdani Winning NYC Help Republicans In The Governor’s Race?

Zohran Mamdani’s win in the New York City Mayoral election was seen as a landmark moment for the Democratic party by some as it marked a big step towards the left side of the party. Others believe the win doomed the Democrat party in the rest of New York State and potentially nationwide as it could alienate the more moderate portion of the base. Melissa DeRosa, Democratic political strategist, spoke with Mendte in the Morning about the effect Mamdani’s win had on the Governor’s race next year.

“I actually think that Republicans have the best shot at winning statewide office than they have since George Pataki because of Zohran Mamdani,” DeRosa told host Larry Mendte. “People tend to correct for the politicians and the pendulum swings back both ways… you could see that in New York if Zohran ends up being the debacle I believe he’s going to be.”

DeRosa believes that despite the head start they have, Republicans don’t have the easiest path: “You sort of have this gift for the Republicans statewide in New York but they’re now going to engage in their own primary, which is going to cost time and attention, there’s going to be infighting, and so I think it diminishes their chance to be victorious in the fall if they engage in a nasty primary battle.”
