The Tri-State area is experiencing a significant rise in flu cases, prompting several hospitals to reinstate mask mandates. The New York State Department of Health reported over 14,000 flu cases for the week ending November 29, marking an 80% increase from the previous week. Hospitalizations have surged by 93% in the same period. In New Jersey, flu cases have risen to more than 2,000, nearly quadrupling the number from the same time last year.

According to NBC New York, the flu has been declared "prevalent" in New York, leading to mask mandates in healthcare facilities for unvaccinated staff. Dr. Richard Stumacher from Stamford Hospital noted that the actual number of cases might be higher since many people are not getting tested.

The New York State Health Department emphasizes the importance of flu vaccinations, which remain the most effective way to prevent infection and reduce severe illness. National Influenza Vaccination Week, from December 1 to 5, serves as a reminder to get vaccinated.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a 7.1% increase in positive influenza tests nationwide, with New York among the states with high flu activity levels. The new H3N2 subclade K variant is responsible for many cases this season, as noted by WMTW.

With flu cases on the rise, health officials urge the public to stay updated on vaccinations and adhere to preventive measures like wearing masks in high-risk settings.
