Flu season is intensifying across New York, with the state Department of Health reporting a significant increase in cases. As of the latest data, there have been 17,000 positive flu cases across 62 counties, marking a 117 percent increase from the previous week. Hospitalizations have reached at least 1,000, and medical professionals are preparing for more patients.
According to the New York State Department of Health, the flu season can last until April, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the peak typically occurs between December and February. The CDC also reported that the 2024–25 flu season was particularly severe, with high rates of outpatient visits, hospitalizations, and deaths related to the virus.
Health officials recommend that individuals get their flu shots to protect against the virus. Vaccines are available at various clinics, which can be located through vaccines.gov. The New York State Department of Health has also expanded its flu report to include data on COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), providing a comprehensive view of respiratory illnesses.
