New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani met on Tuesday at Gracie Mansion to discuss the transition of power. The meeting marked the first time the two have sat down together since Mamdani's election victory nearly a month ago. Mayor Adams expressed hope that many of his key initiatives would continue under Mamdani's leadership. He highlighted achievements such as reduced crime rates, increased housing, and job creation during his tenure. Adams stated, "The best compliment is duplication, and they’re going to duplicate a lot of things we did" as reported by PIX11.

Mamdani acknowledged some positive aspects of Adams' administration, particularly praising NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch's crime-fighting record. Mamdani has asked Tisch to remain in her position, citing her role in achieving record-low crime rates in the city. According to amNY, New York City saw the fewest shooting incidents and victims in recorded history through the first 11 months of 2025. Commissioner Tisch credited these gains to precision policing strategies.

Despite his critiques of Adams' policies, Mamdani emphasized the importance of a smooth transition and continuity in effective strategies. He also expressed appreciation for initiatives like the "City of Yes" and improvements in trash management. Mamdani remains noncommittal about moving into Gracie Mansion, opting to stay in his Queens apartment with his wife for now.

As Mamdani prepares to take office, he faces the challenge of maintaining the city's safety while pursuing his own agenda. Experts, such as former NYPD Commissioner William Bratton, advised Mamdani to focus on other areas like rent control and mental health, while allowing the NYPD to continue its successful strategies. Mamdani has stated that evidence will guide his administration, and he plans to build on the progress made under Adams' leadership.
