As the calendar turns over to December, it is time for New York football fans to start the early post-mortem on another season down the drain. The year has already cost Giants head coach Brian Daboll his job, though the five blown fourth-quarter leads of at least ten points didn’t help. Giants fans can hope for a fresh start next year however in fearless rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, who has shown flashes of brilliance in the pocket when he isn’t hurt. Jets fans meanwhile are hoping first-year head coach Aaron Glenn just needed more time to change the culture on the Jets sideline, as they’ve gone 3-2 since dropping the first seven games on their schedule, but stubbornly held onto the belief that QB Justin Fields is their man. Long-time New York sportscaster Warner Wolf appeared on 710 WOR’s Mendte in the Morning program to analyze what the immediate future holds for the local teams as the season winds down.
“Hey, let’s hear it for the Jets, improving to 3-9,” Wolf suggested to host Larry Mendte, as the Jets beat the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, 27-24 on a late field goal. “So, here’s the question: why not give the rookie quarterback, Brady Cook, a shot in the last five games [and] see what he can do? The Jets aren’t going anywhere, and we know what the other guys can do- or cannot do.”
Wolf also broke down the quarterback match-up for Monday night’s tilt in New England, as the 2-10 Giants face the surprising 10-2 Patriots. “It’s really the battle of the kids- the return of 22-year-old rookie Jaxson Dart, against 23-year-old second year man, Drake Maye. That would be unheard of years ago… [but the Patriots] fixed the offensive line, I’ll tell you that, they have a good coach, and Drake Maye has improved, my gosh.”
