New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has raised $2 million for his transition efforts, aiming for a total of $4 million by his inauguration. In less than 20 days, over 25,000 donors contributed an average of $75 each, showcasing a "people-powered" approach. Mamdani emphasizes that his transition does not rely on wealthy donors, contrasting with previous administrations.
The funds will support staffing and processing over 70,000 job applications for his administration. Mamdani's transition team includes 400 appointees across 17 committees, with new additions focused on Worker Justice and Community Organizing. Mamdani's agenda includes raising the minimum wage, higher taxes on millionaires, and freezing rents on one million apartments.
While some business leaders express concerns about execution, others, like Kathryn Wylde of the Partnership for New York City, recognize the importance of addressing affordability issues. Mamdani remains open to ideas, focusing on outcomes rather than processes.
