Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has received a significant boost in her campaign to become the next governor of New York, securing an endorsement from Congressman Mike Lawler. Lawler, once considered a top contender for the Republican gubernatorial nomination himself, announced his support for Stefanik at a rally in Rockland County on Monday. He praised Stefanik as a "champion" and a "fighter" who has consistently stood up for New Yorkers.

Stefanik, who is aiming to unseat current Governor Kathy Hochul, is likely to face a primary challenge from Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. Despite Blakeman's potential candidacy, Stefanik has already garnered endorsements from 58 of the 62 county GOP chairs in New York. Lawler's endorsement further solidifies her standing within the party.

Blakeman, who has been exploring a gubernatorial run, emphasized the importance of selecting a candidate with the best chance of winning, citing his success with independent and Democratic voters in Long Island. Meanwhile, Governor Hochul, who took office after Andrew Cuomo's resignation, currently holds a lead over Stefanik in recent polls.

The upcoming election is expected to be highly competitive, with both parties focusing on issues like crime, affordability, and energy. Stefanik's endorsement by Lawler and other prominent Republicans underscores her strong position within the GOP as she prepares for the primary and general elections next year.
