New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani expressed optimism following his meeting with President Trump at the White House on Friday. Mamdani described the discussion as productive, focusing on key issues such as immigration, public safety, and the cost of living in New York City.

Mamdani, who will assume office on January 1, emphasized the importance of allowing the NYPD to manage crime in the city. He shared his hopes that the Trump administration would not deploy the National Guard, asserting that crime was under control and federal intervention was unnecessary. In an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," Mamdani stated, "I made it very clear what we wanted to do was to deliver public safety and affordability, and the NYPD would be the ones to do so" as reported by The New York Times.

The meeting also addressed affordability concerns, a significant issue for many New Yorkers. Mamdani highlighted the need for collaboration to tackle the city's cost of living crisis. He remarked, "I'm feeling good coming out of that meeting. I thought it was a productive meeting. And I appreciated that in that meeting it went back to cost of living, cost of living, cost of living" according to ABC7NY.

While Mamdani and Trump have had their differences, with Trump previously labeling Mamdani a "communist," the mayor-elect is hopeful for a cooperative relationship. He told reporters that he and Trump are "establishing a productive relationship" and reiterated his commitment to addressing public safety and affordability issues as noted by The City.
