After weeks of trading barbs in the press and on various social platforms, President Donald Trump has invited New York’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to visit him at the White House on Friday. Trump has hinted at withholding federal dollars earmarked for his hometown, while Mamdani has made “affordability” the new buzzword in the five boroughs at Trump’s expense. To say people will be interested in the outcome of the meeting is perhaps the ultimate in understating the situation. WOR White House correspondent Jon Decker will be at the White House for the Trump-Mamdani summit; he appeared on 710 WOR’s Mendte in the Morning program to let listeners know what they can expect as the two leaders get to know each other.

Decker explained for host Larry Mendte why Trump may have wanted to have the sit-down with his “favorite commie” in the first place: “Look, the President is a native New Yorker. The President very much cares about the direction of the city of New York, and the President wants to make certain that Mamdani doesn’t govern as the person he ran as when he was campaigning for the Democratic nomination- as a socialist. He wants to work with the newly elected mayor of New York in a way that benefits the city, and I think that’s what that conversation is all about.”

Decker also discussed the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, which may still leave some people feeling dissatisfied but will mean closure for most observers: “I think that that’s going to disappoint a lot of people and it will lead to claims that some of the material that they wanted to see released is not being released… [but] the authors of this legislation prescribed in the legislative language that redactions will be necessary to protect victims and their identities… but overall, if you hear the bi-partisan sponsors of this legislation, they are so pleased that this all came to fruition this week.”
