Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani recently met with NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, expressing his hope that she will continue to lead the department under his administration. Mamdani praised Tisch for her efforts in reducing crime and increasing accountability across New York City, stating, "I do want her to stay" during an interview with WABC-TV. Tisch, however, has not yet confirmed whether she will remain in her role once Mamdani takes office.

Mamdani, a self-described Democratic Socialist, has previously made statements about reforming the police department, including creating a Department of Community Safety to handle issues like mental health and homelessness. This plan has faced criticism from law enforcement officials who deem it impractical and potentially dangerous. Despite these differences, Mamdani remains confident in Tisch's ability to work towards their shared goal of public safety.

Mamdani's meeting with Tisch comes as part of his transition into office, where he is assembling a team of experienced leaders to support his ambitious agenda. As reported by the New York Post, Mamdani has acknowledged their differing views on police staffing levels, but he believes the current number of officers is sufficient.

The meeting also follows Mamdani's appointment of key figures to his administration, including Dean Fuleihan as his first deputy mayor. As Mamdani prepares to take office, he continues to emphasize the importance of creating a safe and just city for all New Yorkers.
