New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is set to meet with NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch amid questions about their communication. Although Mamdani has expressed his desire for Tisch to remain as commissioner, the two have not spoken personally since July. Mamdani's transition team confirmed that the meeting is scheduled soon, and both teams have been in regular contact since Mamdani's election victory on November 4.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, first mentioned keeping Tisch during a forum in March and confirmed his intention in October. His decision aims to reassure moderate Democrats and business leaders concerned about his progressive stance on policing. Tisch has been praised for her efforts to combat corruption and reduce crime rates, but her views on criminal justice laws have clashed with Mamdani's base.
The meeting comes as Mamdani prepares to take office, having recently announced an all-female transition team. The team includes former City Hall officials and a former Federal Trade Commission chair. Mamdani's campaign promises focus on addressing the cost of living crisis and protecting vulnerable New Yorkers.
As reported by Politico, Mamdani said, "I look forward to that conversation and then telling you exactly how it went." The meeting with Tisch is seen as a crucial step in fulfilling his campaign promise and shaping his administration's approach to public safety.
