New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani spent Veterans Day in the Bronx, serving warm meals to veterans instead of attending the annual parade. On Tuesday, Mamdani visited the Commonwealth Veterans Residence in Parkchester, where he served fried chicken, ziti, and other dishes to about three dozen veterans. He emphasized the importance of listening to veterans' stories and addressing their needs.
Mamdani's decision to skip the parade marks a departure from previous mayors-elect, such as Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams, who participated in the event. Mamdani stated, "I haven’t thought much about parades," and expressed a desire to focus on helping veterans who have been "left behind and forgotten" by the city and nation.
According to Yahoo News, Mamdani highlighted his affordable housing agenda, which aims to ensure veterans are not priced out of the city. His spokesperson noted that the plan would build on existing programs like SARA and ELLA to expand affordable housing for veterans. Additionally, Mamdani's administration plans to invest in mental health services, no-cost childcare, and fast, free buses to support veterans.
While some residents, like Chelsea's Adeline Jann, wished Mamdani had attended the parade, others appreciated his hands-on approach to supporting veterans. As Mamdani prepares to take office, he has vowed to work on behalf of veterans "every single day."
