New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani plans to reach out to President Donald Trump to discuss ways to help New Yorkers, especially regarding the high cost of living. During an interview with WNBC on Tuesday, Mamdani expressed his willingness to engage with President Trump on issues like lowering living costs and providing cheaper groceries, which were central to both their campaigns. Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, emphasized the need for President Trump to deliver on his campaign promises, particularly concerning inflation and grocery prices.

Mamdani criticized outgoing Mayor Eric Adams, stating that previous administrations prioritized their interests over those of the people. Mamdani, who will be sworn in on January 1, 2026, aims to address affordability, public transit, and quality-of-life issues. He highlighted the importance of delivering on campaign pledges, which some critics have labeled as ambitious or unrealistic. Mamdani's campaign focused on making city bus travel free, controlling rents, and offering free childcare.

According to the Economic Times, Mamdani remarked that the White House had not yet congratulated him on his victory. He also introduced the five women who will co-chair his transition, including Lina Khan, chair of the Federal Trade Commission, and Maria Torres-Springer, a former deputy mayor.

Mamdani told NY1 that he is ready to collaborate with President Trump if it benefits New Yorkers but will defend the city if necessary. He emphasized his commitment to leading all New Yorkers, regardless of political affiliation, through the affordability crisis.

WFXG reports that Mamdani's rapid rise to mayor-elect has surprised many, and he continues to focus on preparing to govern effectively from day one.
