An investigation is underway following the death of New York City firefighter Patrick Brady, who died while battling a fire in Brooklyn over the weekend. The 42-year-old firefighter, an 11-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York, experienced a medical episode and went into cardiac arrest while fighting a blaze on Kings Highway. He was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The fire, initially described as a "five-alarm" fire, saw Brady working on the roof when he collapsed. According to ABC7NY, Brady was a resident of Queens and is survived by his wife, Kara, and his two brothers, Jimmy and Brian, who are also FDNY firefighters. Other members of his family, including cousins and uncles, also serve in the FDNY.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences, stating, "Firefighter Patrick Brady gave his life protecting the city we all love; there is no sacrifice that is more selfless than the actions that took place this evening." Brady's death marks the 1,163rd line-of-duty death in the FDNY's history and the second in the last two weeks.
A bunting ceremony was held on Sunday morning at Brady's home firehouse, where black and purple bunting was draped in his honor. Funeral arrangements are pending, and Brady is remembered by colleagues as someone who "brightened up the room" and was "larger than life."
