Politicians and groups worldwide are reacting to Zohran Mamdani's election as mayor of New York City. The Democratic socialist, a Muslim of Indian descent born in Uganda, became an American citizen in 2018 and will now lead the nation's largest city. London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has faced similar religious attacks, called Mamdani's election a "win for hope."
In Israel, reactions were mixed. According to The New York Times, Israeli national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said Mamdani's election would "be remembered eternally as a moment when antisemitism overcame common sense." However, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon expressed a commitment to work with New York's Jewish leaders to ensure their security.
Mamdani has consistently spoken against antisemitism and emphasized expanding efforts to protect Jewish New Yorkers. In his victory speech, he promised to build a City Hall that stands alongside Jewish communities.
In India, Mamdani's win sparked both criticism and support. Indian nationalists criticized him as anti-Hindu due to his opposition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while opposition leaders celebrated his victory. The Guardian reported that Abhishek Manu Singhvi, an Indian opposition figure, said the win "shows that liberal values still prosper."
Mamdani's international background has drawn attention, and his campaign focused on making New York more affordable. He has faced Islamophobia from both Democratic and Republican politicians, yet a CNN exit poll suggested he won significant support from Jewish voters.
