In the wake of significant Democratic victories in key races across the United States, President Donald Trump attributed the Republican losses to his absence from the ballot. On Tuesday, Democrats secured gubernatorial wins in Virginia and New Jersey, and Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, became the first Muslim mayor of New York City. In California, voters approved Proposition 50, allowing Democrats to redraw congressional maps to their advantage.
President Trump took to Truth Social to express his thoughts, stating, "TRUMP WASN'T ON THE BALLOT," and also cited the ongoing government shutdown as a factor in the Republican defeats. The elections, which took place during an off-year, served as an early indicator of public sentiment towards Trump's administration. According to Al Jazeera, exit polls showed a significant portion of voters disapproved of Trump's handling of the presidency.
The Democrats' victories are seen as a potential precursor to the 2026 midterms, where the party hopes to build on this momentum. In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger won the governorship, becoming the state's first female governor, while Mikie Sherrill made history as New Jersey's first female Democratic governor. Mamdani's victory in New York City marked a historic moment as he became the city's first Muslim and South Asian mayor.
Despite the losses, President Trump remained defiant, suggesting that the absence of his name on the ballot and the prolonged government shutdown were to blame. He also emphasized the need for Republicans to terminate the legislative filibuster to advance his legislative priorities.
