In New Jersey, the governor's race between Democrat Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli is drawing national attention as voters head to the polls on Tuesday. Both candidates have been actively campaigning, with Sherrill maintaining a narrow lead over Ciattarelli, according to recent polls.

Mikie Sherrill, a Democratic U.S. Representative, is leveraging anti-Trump sentiment to rally support. She has criticized President Donald Trump and tied her opponent, Ciattarelli, to the president's policies. Sherrill emphasized the importance of protecting families and opportunities in New Jersey, urging voters to stand against what she describes as attacks on their values. Former President Barack Obama campaigned with Sherrill, praising her integrity and commitment to service.

On the other side, Jack Ciattarelli, a former state assemblyman, is running for governor for the third time. He is capitalizing on Trump's gains in New Jersey from the 2024 election, aiming to solidify the state's rightward shift. Despite distancing himself from Trump in previous races, Ciattarelli has embraced Trump's influence this time, participating in tele-rallies with the former president. Ciattarelli's campaign focuses on issues like affordability and taxes, and he has criticized Sherrill for her past actions and policies.

The race has not been without controversy. In September, Sherrill's unredacted military records were accidentally released, leading to accusations of political weaponization. Additionally, Ciattarelli has faced scrutiny over his past business dealings. Both candidates have made final pushes to energize their bases, with Sherrill holding a rally in Montclair and Ciattarelli rallying in Raritan.

As New Jersey is one of only two states (Virginia being the other) holding gubernatorial elections this November, the outcome is seen as a potential indicator for the 2026 midterms. Polls in New Jersey are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
