On Sunday, New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez held a rally at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. The event was part of Mamdani's campaign to become the next mayor of New York City and was attended by thousands of supporters. The rally focused on opposing President Trump and promoting progressive policies.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist and state assembly member, emphasized his campaign's focus on creating a "movement of the masses" against wealthy donors and oligarchs. "While Donald Trump’s donor billionaires think they have the money to buy this election, we have a movement of the masses," Mamdani told the crowd. He outlined plans for universal child care, rent freezes, and affordable housing as part of his platform.
Senator Sanders and Representative Ocasio-Cortez, both prominent figures in the progressive movement, supported Mamdani's candidacy. Sanders described Mamdani's potential victory as a "nightmare" for President Trump, while Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the broader implications of the election. "There has been a day before his presidency and there will be a day after, and it belongs to us," Ocasio-Cortez said.
The rally also featured appearances by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. While Hochul faced some opposition from the crowd due to her stance on taxing the rich, she expressed support for Mamdani, emphasizing the need for a fighter in City Hall.
With early voting underway and the election set for November 4, Mamdani urged supporters not to become complacent despite his lead in the polls. He faces competition from former Governor Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. The rally's slogan, "New York Is Not for Sale," underscored Mamdani's message against the influence of wealthy donors in politics.
