An investigation is underway after a construction worker died following a fall at a Hudson Yards construction site in Manhattan on Thursday. The worker, employed by the New York Concrete Corporation, fell about 50 to 60 feet into an underground pit at the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing project on West 30th Street, according to New York Daily News.
Firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes and found the worker at the bottom of the pit. Despite their efforts to rescue him, he succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. The worker's identity has not yet been released, and the cause of the fall remains unknown, as reported by New York Post.
The Hudson Yards Concrete Casing project is part of the larger Gateway Program, which aims to double the rail lines into New York Penn Station. The project is currently suspended pending the investigation. The Gateway Development Commission, Amtrak, and Related Companies have expressed their condolences to the worker's family, emphasizing the tragedy of the incident.
This is the second fatal construction accident in Manhattan this week, following the death of a window washer at Columbia University. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had previously cited the project site for safety issues earlier this year, according to NorthJersey.com. The investigation continues to determine the circumstances surrounding the fall.
