Former Long Island Congressman George Santos has endorsed former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race. Santos, who was recently released from prison after President Trump commuted his sentence, announced his support for Cuomo on social media. He urged Cuomo, running as an independent, to form a coalition with Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa to prevent Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani from winning. Santos expressed concern that Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, would negatively impact the city.
Despite his endorsement, Santos acknowledged his absence from the political scene during his imprisonment and asked for understanding from critics. He emphasized that his decision was influenced by polling data showing Mamdani's lead over Cuomo could narrow if Sliwa exited the race. Santos' comments have sparked discussions online, with some questioning his choice given Cuomo's controversial past.
Santos' endorsement comes as other prominent figures, like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have yet to publicly support a candidate. Meanwhile, Sliwa has refused to drop out of the race, rejecting offers to do so.
