Broadway musicians, represented by Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM), have announced their intention to strike if a new contract agreement is not reached by Thursday. The musicians have been working without a contract since August 31 and are seeking improved wages and job security that reflect the recent success of New York City's theater industry.
According to Today.com, the union has accused the Broadway League, the national trade association for the Broadway industry, of demanding wage cuts and reduced benefits. Local 802 President Bob Suttmann stated, "If we do not have a new contract by Thursday morning, we are prepared to strike immediately." The union's members overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike if necessary, with 98% in favor.
The last major Broadway strike, which occurred in 2007, lasted 19 days. The potential strike could affect numerous musicals and theaters across New York City. Both parties are scheduled to meet with a mediator today in hopes of reaching an agreement. The Broadway League has expressed its commitment to negotiating in good faith to secure a fair contract.
