A new report from Advocates for Children of New York reveals that over 154,000 public school students in New York City experienced homelessness during the last school year. This marks the tenth consecutive year where more than 100,000 students were without a permanent home, highlighting a persistent issue in the city. The report indicates that nearly one in every seven students in the city's public schools is affected by homelessness.

The nonprofit organization, which aims to ensure equitable education for all students, emphasizes the negative impact of homelessness on education. Students without stable housing often miss more school days and perform worse academically compared to their peers.

Advocates for Children of New York provides various forms of support to these students and their families, including legal representation and know-your-rights training. Their policy advocacy and litigation efforts aim to spur changes in the education system to better support marginalized students.

The organization hopes to reverse these troubling statistics by continuing to push for reforms and providing direct support to affected families. The report serves as a call to action for policymakers and educators to address the underlying causes of homelessness and its impact on students' education.
