Police in New York City are searching for a mother who abandoned her newborn baby at a subway station in Manhattan. The baby girl was discovered on Monday morning at the Herald Square station, wrapped in a blanket with her umbilical cord still attached. Officers found the child alert and stable and she is currently receiving care at Bellevue Hospital.

Authorities are using this incident to remind the public about New York's Safe Haven Law. Under this law, parents can legally leave a newborn at designated safe locations such as hospitals, police stations, or firehouses, but not in places like subway stations. The law is intended to provide a safe alternative for parents who feel unable to care for their newborns.

The police are continuing their investigation and are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The safety and well-being of the child remain the top priority as they work to locate the mother.
