New York City Mayor Eric Adams is contemplating endorsing a candidate in the upcoming mayoral race. On Wednesday, Adams confirmed discussions with former Governor Andrew Cuomo about potentially endorsing him. However, Adams has yet to make a final decision. Cuomo, running as an independent, acknowledged the importance of gaining support, stating, "the more support you have, the better," but did not elaborate further.

The mayoral race has drawn significant attention, featuring Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist, leads the polls with a double-digit margin, but Cuomo is closing the gap. According to a recent Quinnipiac University poll, Mamdani holds 46% support among likely voters, while Cuomo has 33%, and Sliwa stands at 15%.

Adams, who dropped out of the race last month following scandals, including a 2024 indictment on federal bribery and fraud charges, is seen as a potential key supporter for Cuomo. Some analysts believe Cuomo needs Adams' former supporters to challenge Mamdani's lead effectively. The race remains dynamic, with the candidates set to debate at Rockefeller Plaza on Thursday night, addressing issues such as affordable housing and the city's budget deficit.

Mamdani, who would be New York City's first Muslim and South Asian mayor, has proposed progressive policies like free bus services and city-owned grocery stores. His candidacy has sparked controversy, drawing criticism from rivals and President Donald Trump, who has threatened to withhold federal funding if Mamdani wins. As the election approaches, the endorsement decision by Adams could play a pivotal role in shaping the race's outcome.
