Warner Wolf Reviews The Yankees, Giants And Jets In "The Lost Weekend"

The first weekend in October was not a good one for New York sports fans. The Yankees were outscored by the Toronto Blue Jays 23-8 in the first two games of their American League Divisional Series and are a game away from packing up for the off-season. The outlook wasn’t any better if you’re a football fan, as the Giants lost a mistake-filled game to the Saints 26-14 to slip to 1-4 on the year, while the 0-5 Jets were never in a 37-22 beat-down by the Cowboys that leaves them as the only winless team in the NFL. Factor in the recent endings to the seasons for the Mets and Liberty, and it was all enough to make even the most die-hard New York sports fan wonder if the Knicks season has started yet. Legendary sportscaster Warner Wolf appeared on 710 WOR’s Mendte in the Morning program to tell us what we already knew- if you were a fan of any team with an “N.Y.” on the uniform, you lost!

Wolf did try to find one bright spot for host Larry Mendte, as he heralded the play of rookie Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, though not for long: “The guy’s exciting, and barring an injury, he’s going to be around a long time, but he threw for only 111 yards last week, and just 202 yards yesterday, with two interceptions and he lost a fumble. That’s not going to do it. You’ve got to hit for some yards. And the schedule maker- man, he didn’t do the Giants any favor. Included in the next six weeks: the Eagles, the Broncos, the Eagles again, the 49ers, the Packers and the Lions. They could lose all six of those games!”

As for the winless Jets, Wolf cited one play late in the game that summed up why they look lost: “Late third quarter, Jets trailing 30-3, [head coach] Aaron Glenn ordered a field goal to make it 30-6. I know it was fourth-and-sixteen, but I think you had to go for the first down. What good is a field goal when you’re trailing 30-3 and just one quarter to play? And if you don’t make it, so what; the Cowboys still had to go 70 yards.”
