Governor Kathy Hochul has extended Executive Order 52, allowing New York pharmacists to continue administering COVID-19 vaccines to all residents who wish to receive them. The extension aims to ensure vaccine accessibility while the state works on a long-term legislative solution.
Governor Hochul emphasized her commitment to public health, stating, "I will always do what I can to ensure New Yorkers have access to the vaccines and information families need to make decisions about their health care." She also criticized the federal government's delay in making COVID-19 vaccines available through the Vaccines for Children Program, calling it a risk to children's health.
New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald supports the extension, noting that it ensures continued access to the updated COVID-19 vaccine for eligible New Yorkers. The Department of Health is exploring additional solutions to ensure vaccine access for all children, including those uninsured.
The executive order is part of a broader strategy to maintain vaccine access in New York. The state is also collaborating with other Northeast states on public health initiatives, including vaccination and emergency preparedness.
The order will remain in effect for at least another 30 days, during which time Governor Hochul will work with the Legislature on a permanent solution to ensure ongoing access to vaccines.
