Which Horse Will Eric Adams And His Supporters Back In The Mayoral Race?

In the days since Eric Adams announced he was dropping out of the race, pundits have been speculating on who the mayor’s supporters would now pull for in the race for Gracie Mansion. We probably won’t really know the answer to that question until Election Day, but we should know sooner than that who Adams is backing. The mayor hasn’t endorsed Andrew Cuomo or Zohran Mamdani yet, but with Mamdani far in front of the pack, will his seal of approval even have any effect on the outcome? Former Nassau County Executive Laura Curran appeared on 710 WOR’s Mendte in the Morning program to analyze the mayoral race in New York now that the field has narrowed.

Curran speculated for host Larry Mendte why Adams didn’t come right out and say which horse he’d back in the race: “His support, and also the support of his supporters, is incredibly important for the other folks in the race. It’s interesting, when he did drop out of the race, he did not endorse anybody, and that’s kind of a smart way to get some leverage. If you come out of the gate endorsing someone, you have no more power, but if you have not endorsed anyone yet, people are going to try to curry favor to you, they’re going to offer things for you, you’re in a much better position to make a deal that’s good for you, and I think that’s exactly what he did.”

Curran thinks that Adams will eventually endorse Cuomo over Mamdani for the job, based on the tone of his statements since dropping out. “The best argument for Cuomo is, look at what he’s actually done and built- actual, real things that are in the world that you can look at, ride over, touch, et cetera. And Mamdani- the slam against him is that he’s all promises, building castles in the sky not based on reality.”
