A Jersey City man was arrested for allegedly evading over $18,000 in tolls by covering his license plate with socks. The incident occurred last Friday (September 26) when Port Authority police noticed black socks draped over the license plate of Dwight Bartley's white Mercedes-Benz at the Holland Tunnel. Bartley, who did not have an E-ZPass transponder, was pulled over immediately outside the tunnel.
According to Lenis Valens, a spokesperson for the Port Authority, Bartley owes $18,358 in unpaid tolls and fees linked to 272 violations. He was charged with tampering with a government document, theft of services, and driving with a suspended license. His car was also impounded.
The Port Authority emphasized that this arrest is part of their ongoing efforts to hold drivers accountable and protect revenue for regional infrastructure. Toll enforcement is routinely conducted at all six Hudson River crossings to ensure fairness for all travelers.
According to NJ.com, Bartley's actions highlight the challenges authorities face in toll enforcement and the lengths some drivers will go to avoid paying.
