Mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani has responded to President Donald Trump's threats to cut federal funding to New York City if Mamdani becomes mayor. On Monday, President Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to warn that Mamdani "is going to have problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great City." He criticized Mamdani's "FAKE Communist promises" and suggested that there would be no point in voting for him since Washington would not provide funds to New York City under his leadership.
Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, dismissed Trump's comments during a candidate forum in Harlem, stating that the president is "going through the stages of grief" over Mamdani's potential victory. Mamdani emphasized his commitment to fighting any federal attempts to withhold funds from the city. He noted that even with a mayor who collaborated with the Trump administration, federal policies have continued to affect New York City negatively.
According to CNBC, Mamdani's campaign gained momentum after current Mayor Eric Adams suspended his campaign, leaving Mamdani as the leading candidate. Adams, along with former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Guardian Angels founder and Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa, had faced pressure from Trump and others to step aside to improve Cuomo's chances against Mamdani.
Mamdani's policies, including rent freezes, free buses, and raising the minimum wage, seem to have resonated with voters, leading him to defeat Cuomo in the Democratic primary. Despite Trump's threats, legal experts suggest that withholding federal funds could face significant legal challenges, as previous attempts to do so have been blocked by the courts.
New Yorkers are set to vote in the mayoral election on November 4. Mamdani remains confident in his campaign, asserting that New Yorkers are ready for leadership that prioritizes the city's needs over political games with Washington.
