New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced he is dropping out of the mayoral race, narrowing the competition to Democratic frontrunner Zohran Mamdani, former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Adams, who had been trailing in the polls, cited financial challenges and media scrutiny as reasons for his decision. His departure is seen as a potential boost for Cuomo, but analysts suggest it may not be enough to surpass Mamdani's lead.

According to the New York Post, Adams was polling in the high single digits, with only 9% support, making it unlikely for his exit to significantly impact the race. Democratic Socialist candidate Mamdani remains confident, asserting that Adams' decision does not alter his campaign strategy. Mamdani, who defeated Cuomo in the Democratic primary by 13 points, emphasized his focus on addressing New Yorkers' needs, particularly the working class.

Cuomo, running as an independent, described Adams' decision as "selfless" and beneficial for the city. However, he faces challenges in consolidating support, as he will still compete for votes with Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Democracy Now! reports that President Trump and New York business leaders pressured Adams to exit the race to aid Cuomo's campaign. Trump has reportedly offered positions to Adams and Sliwa to clear the field for Cuomo.

Despite the potential for a more competitive race, Mamdani's campaign remains focused on affordability and working-class issues. He continues to lead in the polls, with a significant advantage over Cuomo, as reported by Al Jazeera. The election is set for November 4.
