Final preparations are underway in New York City as more than 150 world leaders are gathering for the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The event, which takes place at the UN headquarters in Manhattan, is expected to bring significant traffic disruptions and heightened security measures throughout the week.
According to ABC7NY, several streets around the UN, including First Avenue from 42nd to 48th Street, will be closed to traffic, and residents are advised to use public transportation. The NYPD has implemented a comprehensive security plan, deploying drones, patrol officers, and specialized units to ensure safety.
The New York Times reports that the assembly will address pressing global issues such as the war in Ukraine, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and climate change. President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak on Tuesday, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address the assembly on Friday.
The UN's official news highlights the significance of this year's session, marking the 80th anniversary of the UN's establishment. The general debate, starting on Tuesday, will see representatives from all 193 member states discuss global challenges and solutions.
Security is a top priority, especially with the Jewish high holidays approaching, prompting increased police presence at places of worship. The assembly is expected to conclude on Saturday, with ongoing discussions on key issues such as climate action and gender equality continuing throughout the week.
