President Donald Trump has criticized New York Governor Kathy Hochul for endorsing Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee in the New York City mayoral race. Over the weekend, Hochul announced her support for Mamdani, highlighting his potential to challenge Trump and improve life for New Yorkers. Trump responded on social media Monday, calling the endorsement "a very bad one for New York City" and suggesting that federal funds could be withheld from the city if Mamdani wins.

According to Politico, Trump described Mamdani as a "Liddle Communist" and expressed shock at Hochul's decision. Hochul, who is seeking re-election as governor, endorsed Mamdani after pressure from progressive Democrats and Trump's involvement in the race. She praised Mamdani's affordability platform but acknowledged differing views on some of his goals.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist state lawmaker from Queens, won the Democratic nomination in June, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and other candidates. Fox News reports that Mamdani is the frontrunner in recent polls, leading by double digits. Despite Trump's criticism, Mamdani expressed gratitude for Hochul's support, emphasizing party unity and standing up to Trump.

The endorsement may influence other Democratic leaders, such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who have yet to back Mamdani.
