Protecting Your Children’s Mental Health From AI

As AI becomes more popular, more people, especially children, are using it as a placeholder for a therapist or even a friend. The AI chatbots these people are using however are not trained or meant to be used in this way and sometimes the outcomes can be tragic. Rich DeMuro, host of ‘Rich on Tech’ on WOR Sunday nights spoke with Mendte in the Morning about the ways parents can protect their children from becoming too reliant on AI.

“Right now, I think parents have to be a parent,” DeMuro told host Larry Mendte. “You have to talk to your kids about this stuff, you have to understand the warning signs, see how much they’re using it, talk to them about this.”

DeMuro also added that some of the companies behind these AI chatbots are also taking steps to protect their users: “OpenAI… are rolling out new safeguards which include if you say something that might need an intervention, they will get you to emergency services or a trusted contact.”
