How Prevalent Is Age Discrimination In The Workplace?

There are many laws in place to stop companies from discriminating against employees and while they mostly work, one form of discrimination that slips by is ageism. Despite the average age of workers rising, ageism is still very much a part of today’s society. Greg Giangrande, career advice expert, spoke with Mendte in the Morning about ageism in the workplace.

“Ageism is unfortunately a reality that exists but less so in an intentional discriminatory way,” Giangrande told host Larry Mendte. “It’s more about this perception that older workers are resistant to change or less tech savvy.”

Giangrande explained how companies firing older workers may not always be due to ageism however: “It’s not really that they’re targeting age; they’re targeting how much cost can they get out with fewer people, and that tends to be people with more experience who are later in their career.”
