The Importance Of June 17th In American History

Today marks the 250th anniversary of The Battle of Bunker Hill, which took place on June 17th 1775. Bunker Hill was the first major battle of the American Revolution and one of the biggest heroes of the battle and the fight against the British, Dr. Joseph Warren, now has an off-Broadway play telling his story and honoring his legacy. Robert Blecker, Playwright and constitutional historian who wrote ‘Father Anonymous,’ spoke with Mendte in the Morning about Dr. Warren and his importance to the American Revolution.

“On June 17th 1775 Joseph [Warren] awoke… and the cannonade had begun, he could hear it, and over the protests of those closest to him he rushed to Bunker Hill to engage in the fight,” Blecker told host Larry Mendte. “Although he had been commissioned a Major General, he refused command when he got there and insisted on fighting as a volunteer.”

Blecker shared another fact about that Warren that ties him to one of the most famous moments in United States history: “Very few of us know who actually sent Paul Revere on that ride and that was Dr. Joseph Warren. He sent Paul and then he stayed back and he ran the American Revolution for the first two months.”
