Laugh All You Want, But AOC As The Face Of The Democratic Party Makes Sense

More than four months have passed since Donald Trump won the 2024 Presidential election, and the Democratic Party has looked rudderless and lost ever since. Meanwhile, New York’s senior Senator, Chuck Schumer, has heard a growing chorus of calls to quit ever since he had the temerity to convince Democrats a few weeks ago to go along with their GOP counterparts to avoid a government shutdown. One possible answer to both of these Democratic conundrums has pundits asking: could the controversial Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez be the future face of the national Democratic party? Rich Lowry is the editor-in-chief of the National Review. He appeared on 710 WOR’s Mendte in the Morning program to say the idea of AOC as A-number-1 isn’t as far-fetched as people might like to think.

“Well, I’ve done a fair amount of ridicule of AOC in my day,” Lowry admitted to host Larry Mendte. “But she’s charismatic, she is where the base of the Democratic Party is, and I think she’d be kind of an idiot not to challenge Chuck Schumer at this point. The primary is four years away, so there’s time, but I think he’s ripe for the picking.”

Lowry explained why the firebrand New York Representative as both the face of the party and an alternative to Schumer makes sense. “Well, some people are just good at drawing attention. It’s a natural trait- some people are more interesting than others- and then she also obviously has grown up with social media and knows what it is to make a viral post and what-not. Part of it was conservatives inadvertently building her up, but part of it was she was going to be a star regardless… and how could you resist the story of a cocktail waitress coming out of nowhere and beating this long-standing influential Democrat out of nowhere in the primary.”
