Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing "significant gaps" and a "crisis of trust" between them. The surprise announcement came on Tuesday (November 5) as Israel continues to face wars on multiple fronts across the region.
Gallant, a former general known for his gruff, no-nonsense personality, has been at odds with Netanyahu over the ongoing war in Gaza. While Netanyahu has advocated for continued military pressure on Hamas, Gallant has taken a more pragmatic approach, arguing that military force has created the necessary conditions for a temporary diplomatic deal that could bring home hostages held by the militant group.
The dismissal of Gallant, who had developed close ties with U.S. officials, is a risky step for Netanyahu, taken while Israel is waging war on two fronts. The New York Times reports that Gallant had increasingly been viewed as an internal opponent and a more moderate voice within the government on security issues.
Netanyahu has named Israel Katz, the foreign minister, as the new defense minister.
"The security of the state of Israel always was, and will always remain, my life's mission," Gallant said in a statement.
