With the candidates now set, the campaign for the White House can officially get under way. The September 10th debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris is fifteen days away, and Election Day is just eight weeks after that. To many observers, the debate is the proving ground, and it appears Donald Trump is waiting for that night to finally get in gear and challenge Kamala Harris. Mike Kelly is the award-winning columnist for NorthJersey.com; he appeared on 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the morning program and questioned Trump’s strategy, or lack thereof.
“I think the debate is going to be where the rubber meets the road,” Kelly told Riedel and Larry Mendte sitting in for Berman. “He just can’t seem to really focus on the issues that his strategists all say are the most important- the economy, crime and the border. He hasn’t yet found his ‘build that wall’ slogan that will work, and the ‘make America great again’ slogan is old, and I think people are looking for something else from him, and he’s not delivering. He’s just not, and so, if he can deliver, I think he has a really good chance of winning. I mean, despite his mistakes, the race is basically a toss-up. She’s not running away with it yet, so let’s see.”
Kelly also handicapped the race to fill the Senate seat vacated recently by Bob Menendez. Andy Kim, according to Kelly, is the only candidate who has shown up to run, which should infuriate the GOP in the Garden State. “If you’re going to run for office, you’ve really got to put your sneakers on and run, and I don’t know what Curtis Bashaw is up to, other than just talking to pals on the phone and trying to raise money. You’ve got to get out there, and he hasn’t done that, and he’s probably going to lose because he’s not putting the effort into it. This happens from time to time; there are races where Republicans can be competitive, but they simply don’t know how to do the kind of retail politics that I really think New Jersey voters want and expect.”
