New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is officially stepping down on Tuesday, following his conviction on federal corruption charges.
Menendez had remained defiant, initially refusing to resign and even saying that he would run for re-election as an Independent. That changed after a jury found him guilty of 16 federal charges. He'll be sentenced in October.
Governor Phil Murphy is appointing his former top aide George Helmy to serve the remainder of Menendez's term which lasts through the end of the year. In November, New Jersey voters will elect a new U.S. Senator.
