Governor Hochul Signs Measure To Reduce NYC's Speed Limit

Governor Kathy Hochul signed Sammy's Law which will allow New York City to reduce its speed to as low as 20 miles per hour.

“Too many children have been hit and killed by cars speeding through our city streets, shattering families and traumatizing communities," Governor Hochul said.

The measure is named for Sammy Eckstein, a 12-year-old who was killed in 2013 after being hit by a speeding car in Brooklyn. Hochul and other advocates argue the new law will reduce the risk of accidents that result in death and life-threatening injuries.
