Officials on Friday are officially kicking off construction of a brand new rail tunnel under the Hudson River.
The Gateway Tunnel project will improve travel between New York City and New Jersey, replacing tracks that are more than 100 years old. The existing tunnel was also damaged during Hurricane Sandy and officials warn there would be an economic crisis if the tunnel were to become unusable.
Construction of a new tunnel has been delayed for more than a decade. Then-Governor Chris Christie had to cancel one set of plans because he was upset that New Jersey was shouldering the cost. Later plans also remain stalled because of funding issues.
