Former NYPD Commissioner Howard Safir Dies

Howard Safir, who led both the NYPD and FDNY in the 90’s, has died at the age of 81.

Safir first became fire commissioner under then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani, serving from 1994 to 1996. He then was named as police commissioner until 2000.

Safir is credited with helping to drive down the city’s crime rate during the 1990’s.

The cause of death isn’t known. A funeral will be held later this month in Maryland, with a service also expected in New York City.
